About Minnekhada Regional Park

Minnekhada Regional Park is a 1,536-acre natural area located in Coquitlam, British Columbia. The park features extensive forested areas primarily composed of second-growth Douglas fir and western red cedar, as well as grasslands and significant wetland ecosystems, including Minnekhada Lake and surrounding marshes. The park sits on a low plateau formed during glacial periods, providing gentle elevation changes and panoramic views of the Fraser River Valley and Mount Baker. Historically, the land was part of the Minnekhada Ranch, established in the 1930s as a private estate, and later acquired by the Greater Vancouver Regional District in the 1970s for public conservation and recreation purposes. Visitors can enjoy an extensive network of trails suitable for all skill levels, ranging from easy loops around the wetlands to longer ridge-top hikes. The park is noted for its excellent birdwatching opportunities, hosting over 150 bird species including great blue herons, black-capped chickadees, and red-winged blackbirds. Additionally, the marshes support amphibians and other native wildlife. Minnekhada Regional Park is also a favored spot for horseback riding due to dedicated equestrian trails, and its relatively close proximity to Vancouver makes it accessible for day trips. Notable landmarks include the Minnekhada Lodge, a historical building once part of the ranch estate, and various viewing platforms overlooking the wetlands. The park’s combination of varied habitats and recreational facilities appeals to nature lovers, families, and outdoor enthusiasts seeking a peaceful natural retreat within the metropolitan area.
